Police said those involved in the attack are being identified through surveillance footage
Tension gripped West Bengal’s Asansol on Friday night after a violent mob allegedly attacked a police station following a dispute over loudspeaker volume at a local mosque.
According to officials and local residents, the incident began after police personnel from Jahangiri Mohalla police station reportedly asked mosque authorities to lower the loudspeaker volume following a complaint from residents in the area.
The request reportedly triggered protests from a section of locals, who gathered outside the police station demanding action against the officers involved. The situation escalated rapidly as the crowd turned violent and began pelting stones at the police station.

Mob attacks police station in Asansol
Visuals from the area showed extensive damage to the police station premises, with windows shattered and police property vandalised. Several parked motorcycles and police vehicles were also damaged during the violence.
An auto-rickshaw parked near the station was seen with its front glass completely smashed amid the chaos.
As the mob continued attacking the premises with bricks and stones, police resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
The streets around the police station were later seen littered with stones, broken glass and debris.
Heavy police deployment in the area
Following the violence, a heavy police force was deployed in Asansol and nearby areas to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order.
Officials said the situation was brought under control after police intervention.
A local resident told news agency IANS that the violence was unjustified and said the matter should have been resolved peacefully through dialogue.
“This is an incident where some boys came and damaged the police station and took the law into their own hands. They should not have done this. They should have sat down and talked instead,” the resident said.
Police launch investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police PVG Satish of the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate said strict action would be taken against those involved in the attack.
“The miscreants who attacked and vandalised the police station are being identified through video footage and CCTV. No culprits will be spared, and the strictest legal action will be taken against them,” he said.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation has been launched and efforts are underway to identify all those involved in the violence.
Incident comes amid crackdown on loudspeaker violations
The incident occurred a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed police officials across the state to strictly enforce noise pollution norms related to loudspeakers at religious places and public events.
During a meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna, the chief minister reportedly instructed police authorities to take action against violations of permissible sound limits and warned against any laxity in enforcement.
