The race included a 3.8 km swim, 180 km cycling leg and a full marathon
Nandil Sarma, son of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has successfully completed the prestigious Ironman Vietnam triathlon, finishing one of the world’s toughest endurance events in nearly 16 hours.
The 21-year-old achieved the feat on May 10 in Da Nang, Vietnam, after completing the grueling full Ironman course that included a 3.8-kilometre open-water swim, a 180-kilometre cycling segment and a full 42.2-kilometre marathon — all in a single day without interruption.
Currently pursuing his fifth and final year at the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru, Nandil had earlier completed the shorter Ironman 70.3 event in Bahrain and had publicly set a goal of finishing a full Ironman before graduating from university.
After months of intense preparation over the last seven to eight months, he successfully achieved that milestone.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated his son on social media, praising his discipline and determination.
“As a father, it fills me with immense pride to see his discipline, determination and perseverance,” the Assam Chief Minister wrote. “I wish him the very best for the journey ahead and for many more milestones in life.”
Ironman Vietnam is considered one of Asia’s premier endurance competitions and serves as a qualifying event for the Ironman World Championship.
The competition pushes athletes through three physically demanding disciplines consecutively — swimming, cycling and long-distance running — testing not only physical endurance but also mental resilience.
Participants are required to battle fatigue and exhaustion across the day-long event, especially during the final marathon stretch after hours of swimming and cycling.
Nandil’s achievement drew praise from many across Assam and beyond, with several noting his ability to balance rigorous law studies with intense athletic training.
The young athlete is expected to complete his law degree next year.
