TMC leader taken to hospital after confrontation in South 24 Parganas amid post-election tensions
Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly assaulted and heckled by a hostile crowd during a visit to South 24 Parganas on Saturday, prompting police intervention and his subsequent admission to hospital for medical evaluation.
The incident occurred in Sonarpur, where Banerjee had travelled to meet the family of a Trinamool Congress worker who was reportedly killed amid violence following the party’s defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.
Videos circulating on social media showed Banerjee moving through a large crowd while facing aggressive sloganeering and physical jostling. Protesters were also seen shouting slogans against the Trinamool leader, while some reportedly hurled eggs during the confrontation.

Following the incident, he was taken to hospital, where his aunt and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly arrived to meet him.

Banerjee alleges pre-planned attack
Speaking after the incident, Banerjee claimed the attack was orchestrated and accused local authorities of failing to provide adequate security.
“This was pre-planned. There are no police in the area. They want to kill me,” he alleged, adding that he would continue supporting families affected by post-poll violence.
The confrontation has further intensified the political war between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP following the dramatic election outcome in West Bengal.
BJP rejects allegations
The BJP denied any involvement in the incident and dismissed claims that its workers were responsible.
West Bengal BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya said public anger against the Trinamool Congress was the result of years of governance failures and political discontent.
He argued that the ruling party had no moral authority to speak on violence while families affected by post-election unrest continued to seek justice.
Meanwhile, senior Trinamool leader Derek O’Brien strongly condemned the attack, accusing political opponents of targeting one of the opposition’s most prominent leaders.
Political tensions continue after election setback
The incident comes amid growing unrest within the Trinamool Congress following its defeat in the assembly elections.
The BJP secured a decisive victory and formed the government in West Bengal, with Suvendu Adhikari taking over as chief minister.
In recent weeks, several Trinamool leaders have faced protests and confrontations in different parts of the state, reflecting heightened political tensions and public dissatisfaction in the aftermath of the election.
The latest episode is expected to further escalate the political confrontation between the state’s two principal rivals as allegations and counter-allegations continue over post-poll violence and law-and-order concerns.
