India Tests Indigenous Long-Range Cruise Missile, Boosts Strike Capability

The indigenous missile successfully met all mission objectives during a flight-test off the Odisha coast

India marked another major milestone in its defence modernisation programme on Monday as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the flight-test of the indigenous Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the missile successfully achieved all mission objectives, with data collected from multiple tracking and monitoring systems confirming the successful performance of critical technologies and operational parameters.

“The missile achieved all mission objectives, validating critical technologies and demonstrating India’s growing long-range precision strike capability. Developed with all its sub-systems by DRDO with strong participation from Indian industry, the successful test is another major step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat and a stronger national defence ecosystem,” the ministry said.

The missile’s flight was closely tracked by instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, which verified the mission profile and overall system performance.

Key features of the LRLACM

The Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile has been developed entirely within India, with various DRDO laboratories and domestic industry partners contributing to its sub-systems. The Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru, serves as the nodal laboratory for the project.

Developed under the broader Nirbhay and Long-Range Attack Cruise Missile programmes, the system is designed to strengthen India’s indigenous precision strike capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign platforms.

The missile is reportedly capable of striking targets at ranges of up to 1,500 kilometres. It can loiter in the air, identify targets before engagement and carry out high-precision strikes during the terminal phase of its mission. The platform is also designed to carry both conventional and nuclear payloads.

The successful flight-test further reinforces India’s push towards self-reliance in advanced defence technologies while enhancing the country’s long-range deterrence and strategic strike capabilities.

Rajnath Singh congratulates DRDO

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO scientists and industry partners involved in the programme, describing the successful test as a significant achievement for India’s indigenous defence capabilities.

Defence Secretary and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh monitored the launch and praised the teams responsible for the successful mission.

The test was witnessed by senior DRDO officials as well as representatives from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.
