Victims worked as daily-wage labourers at the site
Seven labourers died after a massive rock collapsed inside a stone quarry near Madapatna in Karnataka’s Bengaluru South district on Thursday, prompting police to launch an investigation into the incident.
Boulder fell from height of nearly 40 feet
The accident took place at the Kaveri Crusher quarry, where workers were operating inside a quarry pit when a large boulder being extracted from the top of the quarry gave way and fell on them. Preliminary information indicates that excavation work was underway at the bottom of the quarry while rock removal was simultaneously taking place from above using heavy machinery, including a tractor and an excavator, with the boulder falling from a height of nearly 40 feet and burying the workers beneath it.
All seven victims were migrant daily-wage labourers
All seven labourers died in the incident, with the victims identified as migrant workers from Bihar and Assam who were employed as daily-wage labourers at the stone crusher site.
Investigation underway, questions raised over safety practices
Police have opened a probe into the accident, with early questions emerging over whether adequate safety measures were in place at the site, given that excavation and rock-removal operations were reportedly being carried out simultaneously at different levels of the quarry.
