A fresh political controversy has erupted in Maharashtra after the state Congress referred to Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar as a “gungi gudiya” (mute doll) while criticising her recent public appearances. The remark has triggered a sharp response from the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which accused the Congress of insulting women and lowering the standards of political discourse.
The controversy comes even as speculation over a possible reconciliation between the two NCP factions continues to dominate Maharashtra’s political landscape.
Congress questions Sunetra Pawar’s public silence
The Maharashtra Congress criticised Sunetra Pawar over her recent press conference and visit to Beed, questioning how long she would continue to remain a “gungi gudiya.”
According to the Congress, the remark was aimed at what it described as her silence on important public issues rather than a personal attack.
However, the statement immediately sparked outrage within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, with leaders of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP condemning the language used against the Deputy Chief Minister.
NCP accuses Congress of disrespecting women
The NCP hit back strongly, alleging that the Congress had abandoned its traditional political values and crossed the line by using derogatory language against a woman leader.
Party leaders said the remark reflected the Congress’ declining political culture and accused the opposition of disrespecting women for political gains.
The exchange has further intensified tensions between the Congress and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
Rohit Pawar defends the context
Interestingly, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MLA Rohit Pawar defended the context behind the Congress’ criticism, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the remark were more important than the phrase itself.
He referred to Sunetra Pawar’s recent press conference, alleging that Minister Dhananjay Munde repeatedly interrupted her while she was responding to journalists.
According to Rohit Pawar, Sunetra Pawar should have asserted herself and prevented the interruptions.
He also noted that the phrase “gungi gudiya” has historical political significance, recalling that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was once described using the same expression before emerging as one of India’s strongest political leaders.
Row erupts amid merger buzz
The controversy has surfaced against the backdrop of persistent speculation over a possible merger between the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and the Sharad Pawar faction.
Although reports suggest discussions have taken place within the NDA, there has been no official confirmation.
Recently, senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal indicated that any future decision on reunification would be taken under the guidance of party chief Ajit Pawar, while Sharad Pawar has publicly dismissed reports of an imminent merger.
