Former West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee claimed stones and bricks were thrown at her car and alleged police failed to protect her alleged that her car was attacked with stones and bricks during a visit to Halisahar in North 24 Parganas on Sunday, claiming that she could have been killed if the vehicle’s windows had been open.
Banerjee was travelling to meet the family of Birju Keot, a Trinamool Congress worker who allegedly died in police custody, when protesters surrounded her convoy and staged a demonstration.
According to reports, protesters smeared mud on her car and allegedly threw stones, slippers and water bottles at the vehicle. Police personnel were seen attempting to push the protesters away from the convoy.
‘Could have died,’ says Mamata
Speaking after the incident, Banerjee alleged that unidentified anti-social elements threw stones at her car in front of police personnel.
She claimed that the stones could have caused serious injuries or even killed those inside the vehicle had the windows not been closed.
Banerjee also accused the administration of failing to provide adequate protection during her visit and alleged that the police were acting under the influence of the BJP-led state government.
Her remarks have added another flashpoint to the already tense political atmosphere in West Bengal following the BJP’s victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
BJP condemns attack, denies involvement
The BJP has rejected any suggestion that the party was behind the incident.
State BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya condemned the attack and said the party had no connection with the violence. He called for the police to identify those responsible and take action against them.
The BJP’s denial comes after Banerjee accused political elements of deliberately targeting her convoy and questioned the security arrangements during her visit.
Protest during visit to TMC worker’s family
Banerjee had travelled to Halisahar to meet the family of Birju Keot, who had been arrested in an extortion case and sent to five days of police custody.
Keot’s wife, Jenny Sharma, a former councillor of Kanchrapara municipality, has alleged that he was tortured and beaten in custody and died as a result.
The allegations have not yet received a response from the police.
TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee has also questioned Keot’s arrest, alleging that his name was not included in the FIR. He said the circumstances surrounding his death raised serious questions about the rule of law and police accountability.
Political tensions escalate in Bengal
The alleged attack has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the TMC and BJP, with Banerjee accusing the administration of failing to protect her and the BJP distancing itself from the incident.
The episode comes months after the BJP’s historic victory in West Bengal, which ended the TMC’s long tenure in power and saw Banerjee lose her own Assembly seat.
With allegations surrounding Keot’s death still unresolved, the confrontation in Halisahar has added another layer to the growing political tensions between the two parties.
