Kolkata Police alleges rally breached court-mandated time and venue restrictions

Kolkata Police has registered a suo motu FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court during the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day event in Kolkata. The case was registered at Hastings Police Station and also names organisers of the event.

The FIR follows the TMCP foundation day programme held on August 28 at Cathedral Road, where the Calcutta High Court had permitted the event subject to certain conditions.

Police allege court order was violated

According to Kolkata Police, the High Court had directed that one flank of Cathedral Road must remain open to ensure the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Police alleged that the condition was not followed during the event.

The police also claimed that the organisers exceeded the time limit prescribed by the court for the programme.

The case was registered after police examined the conditions imposed by the High Court for the rally. An officer said the role of everyone involved in the alleged violation would be examined as part of the investigation.

Mamata Banerjee addressed TMCP gathering

Banerjee addressed the gathering during the TMCP foundation day programme on Friday. During her speech, she accused the BJP of targeting her supporters and pledged to oppose what she described as “police atrocities” against them.

The FIR adds another legal and political flashpoint between the TMC and the state authorities, with the alleged breach of the court’s directions now under police investigation.

The development comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, where the TMC and BJP have continued to clash over political rallies, law and order and other contentious issues.
