The AAP leader faces further legal scrutiny over alleged irregularities in sewage treatment plant tenders as the court extends custody of the accused
AAP leader and former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Delhi court on Wednesday in connection with an alleged corruption case involving Delhi Jal Board (DJB) sewage treatment plant tenders. Former DJB CEO Udit Prakash Rai and three other accused were also remanded to judicial custody.
The development came a day after the Delhi government’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested Jain and five others in connection with alleged irregularities in the tendering process for projects involving the augmentation and upgradation of sewage treatment plants.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh also ordered two days of police custody for Ankit Srivastava, a former contractual consultant with the Delhi Jal Board. The other accused include private individuals Nagendra Yadav, Raja Kumar Kurra and Pankaj Verma.
The case dates back to a complaint filed by the Directorate of Vigilance, following which an FIR was registered in May 2024. Investigators have alleged large-scale irregularities, manipulation of tender conditions and criminal conspiracy in the awarding of contracts related to DJB sewage treatment projects.
The ACB had sought 14 days of judicial custody for Jain, Rai and other accused as the investigation continues. Jain’s counsel has challenged the arrest, while a bail plea filed on his behalf is also before the court. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on August 25.
Jain, however, has denied wrongdoing. During the court proceedings, he argued that he was not involved in the technical aspects of the tendering process and had relied on experts handling those matters.
The arrest has also triggered a political confrontation. AAP leaders have questioned the action and alleged political vendetta. Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal criticised the arrest, while Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj described the case as politically motivated.
With Jain now in judicial custody and the investigation continuing, the Delhi Jal Board tender case has emerged as another major legal challenge for the senior AAP leader.
