Ladakh to get Jammu and Kashmir High Court bench as Centre moves to improve access to justice
The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of a bench of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in Ladakh, in a move aimed at bringing judicial services closer to residents of the strategically important Union Territory.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision, saying the new bench would significantly improve access to justice for people living in remote and far-flung areas of Ladakh.
Easier access to legal services
Shah said the decision would reduce the time required for residents to access legal services, particularly for those who otherwise have to travel long distances for judicial proceedings.
The move is expected to reduce the time and expense involved in travelling to the High Court’s existing seats in Jammu and Srinagar.
Part of wider development push
The Centre said the decision reflects its continued commitment to the development of Ladakh and to strengthening constitutional safeguards for the Union Territory.
Ladakh became a separate Union Territory following the reorganisation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court continues to serve as the common High Court for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The establishment of a bench in Ladakh is expected to strengthen judicial infrastructure in the region while making the justice delivery system more accessible to its residents.
A significant step for a remote Union Territory
For residents of Ladakh, where geography and difficult terrain can make travel challenging, a local High Court bench could substantially ease access to higher judicial proceedings.
The Cabinet decision therefore marks an important step towards bringing judicial administration closer to the people of Ladakh while reinforcing the Centre’s broader focus on infrastructure and governance in the Union Territory.
