BJP cites website’s claims as Congress accuses it of political targeting
The BJP has stepped up its attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after a newly launched website, ‘Jhooth Ki Goonj’, claimed to have fact-checked statements made by him during his recent student outreach campaign.
The website said it examined 40 statements made by Gandhi across four events linked to his ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ campaign and classified 29 as false and 11 as misleading. The claims covered issues including government jobs, unemployment, education and sexual violence.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said the website represented a response from young people to what he described as Gandhi’s attempt to use students’ grievances for political purposes. He said the Congress leader could continue with his political outreach, but young people were now questioning and examining his claims.
Another BJP spokesperson, Prem Shukla, said the website was exposing Gandhi’s claims one by one and claimed that the facts had answered his allegations.
Congress calls website a political weapon
The Congress, however, has rejected the allegations and accused the BJP of creating the website as a political tool to target Gandhi.
The controversy over ‘Jhooth Ki Goonj’ comes as the BJP and Congress continue to trade accusations over the credibility of political claims and counterclaims, with social media and independent-looking fact-checking platforms increasingly becoming part of the political battle.
