PM Modi is also expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping as leaders gather in Bishkek for the two-day SCO summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek on Monday, with the ongoing Iran conflict, trade, energy and regional security expected to figure prominently in discussions.
The meeting comes as the two-day SCO summit brings together leaders from India, Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan and Central Asia amid heightened geopolitical tensions. The summit is being held on August 31 and September 1 and marks 25 years of the regional grouping.
Modi-Putin talks amid West Asia crisis
The meeting between PM Modi and Putin assumes significance against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States, which has created fresh uncertainty over energy supplies, shipping routes and regional stability.
West Asia tensions have also pushed crude oil prices higher, adding to concerns for major energy-importing economies such as India. The wider conflict is expected to feature prominently in discussions among SCO leaders.
For India, maintaining stable energy supplies while protecting its strategic interests will remain an important consideration as it engages both Russia and other key players affected by the conflict.
Trade and energy likely to feature
India-Russia economic ties have expanded significantly in recent years, particularly in the energy sector. Russian crude has remained an important component of India’s energy imports, making bilateral discussions on energy security particularly relevant amid the latest geopolitical turmoil.
Trade, investment and broader economic cooperation are also expected to be discussed during the Modi-Putin meeting.
The two leaders are likely to review the trajectory of bilateral ties and exchange views on major regional and global developments. The discussions come ahead of Putin’s expected visit to India later this year, adding further importance to the Bishkek engagement.
PM Modi-Xi meeting also in focus
A possible meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping is another major focus at the SCO summit.
Modi, Xi and Putin are among the key leaders attending the gathering in Bishkek. Modi and Xi last met at the 2025 SCO summit in Tianjin, China, where their interaction attracted considerable attention as India-China ties showed signs of improvement following years of tensions along the Line of Actual Control.
A meeting between Modi and Xi in Bishkek would therefore be closely watched for indications of how the two countries’ relationship is evolving, particularly on border issues, trade and broader regional security.
Iran war adds new geopolitical dimension
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also attending the SCO summit, making the gathering particularly significant amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
PM Modi is separately expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Pezeshkian during the summit, according to reports.
The presence of the Iranian, Russian, Chinese and Indian leadership at the same forum provides an opportunity for discussions on regional stability, energy security and the broader geopolitical consequences of the conflict.
SCO focuses on security, connectivity and trade
The 26th SCO summit is expected to focus on regional security, terrorism, transnational threats, trade, energy, transport connectivity and digital cooperation.
Before leaving for the summit, PM Modi said India would seek to advance its vision for the region, with particular emphasis on security, connectivity and opportunity. He also stressed the need for a region free from terrorism, separatism and extremism.
The SCO now comprises 10 member states, including India, China, Russia, Pakistan and Iran, along with several dialogue partners and observer countries. The organisation has evolved from a regional security grouping into a broader platform for economic, political and strategic engagement.
PM Modi’s Central Asia outreach
The Bishkek summit is the second leg of PM Modi’s Central Asia engagement after his two-day visit to Uzbekistan, where India and Uzbekistan elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership and agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, defence and energy.
PM Modi’s SCO visit is expected to further India’s engagement with Central Asia while providing an important platform for dialogue with Russia, China and Iran at a time of heightened global uncertainty.
