TMC-BJP Blame Game Erupts After Kunal Ghosh’s Car Pelted With Eggs, Stones

TMC MLA and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh‘s car came under attack in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Saturday, with a mob pelting it with stones and eggs and shattering both windshields as he made his way to a rally led by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

The incident occurred in the Uttarpara area as Ghosh headed to Serampore, where Banerjee was set to address supporters under a court-mandated crowd cap. Videos shared on social media show a group carrying black flags surrounding Ghosh’s vehicle, shouting slogans, and hurling stones and eggs at the windscreen as glass shattered.

“This is jungle raj,” says Ghosh

Speaking to reporters afterward, Ghosh said BJP-aligned individuals attacked his car with lathis and rods while a mob blocked the road, and that both windshields were broken with glass shards falling on him inside the vehicle. He said no police personnel were present at the scene and called the incident “jungle raj,” adding that he would file a formal complaint at Lal Bazaar or Bhawani Bhawan, the state police headquarters, once back in Kolkata. He also said he was fortunate the driver was not injured, or the situation could have been more serious.

Political blame game

TMC leaders were quick to blame the BJP, with party leader Asit Majumdar describing the attack as pre-planned rather than a spontaneous public reaction. The BJP rejected the characterisation; Uttarpara BJP MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty called it a spontaneous response from members of the public, and the party has broadly framed similar incidents as expressions of public anger against what it calls “corrupt” TMC leaders.

Mamata Banerjee condemned the attack, appealing for calm and urging both sides to avoid confrontation. “I once again request… please cooperate. Don’t create a nuisance for Bengal,” she said, adding that her party’s supporters were being blocked and beaten on the way to the court-sanctioned Serampore meeting.
