Maharashtra FDA Suspends 30 Food Licences, Seizes Over 50,000 kg of Stock Worth Rs 1.19 Crore in Festive Crackdown

Five-day drive across 14 districts uncovers hygiene violations including rat droppings and cockroaches

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration suspended the licences of 30 food establishments and seized more than 50,000 kilograms of food stock worth Rs 1.19 crore during a five-day statewide crackdown ahead of the festive season, the department said.

The drive, carried out from September 23 to 27 under FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, covered establishments across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Pune, Kolhapur, Solapur, Jalgaon, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Akola. In total, 50,601.78 kg of food products, including sweets, milk and milk products, edible oil, rice, dry fruits, namkeen, farsan, tea, spices, sauces, noodles and wafers, were seized or destroyed.

Kyani & Co. among high-profile names hit

Of the 30 licence suspensions, 13 were in Mumbai alone, and the list included Mumbai’s 122-year-old Irani cafe Kyani & Co. and Royal China. Inspections at the affected outlets reportedly turned up violations including rat droppings, cockroaches, blood found in a fridge, and other unhygienic storage conditions.

Regional breakdown of seizures

The FDA said food products worth Rs 32.74 lakh were seized or destroyed in the Nagpur division over unhygienic storage, adulteration, substandard quality, labelling defects and unlicensed operations. In Jalgaon, 7,749.9 kg of food products worth Rs 4.28 lakh were seized, while in Pune, Kolhapur and Solapur, officials seized 6,366.88 kg of food worth Rs 28.54 lakh.

Broader enforcement action

Beyond food seizures, the department also confiscated banned tobacco stock worth Rs 30.63 lakh, registered 22 FIRs, arrested 30 people, sealed three establishments and seized three vehicles worth Rs 14.80 lakh during the drive.

The crackdown is part of a larger, ongoing enforcement push by the Maharashtra FDA under Commissioner Mundhe; a separate 100-day drive earlier this year had already covered 12,000 food outlets, resulting in 603 licence suspensions and more than 5,200 notices issued.
