Remarks come as India continues to balance ties with both Moscow and Washington amid the ongoing war

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s efforts to end the Ukraine conflict, saying Modi has consistently raised the issue of ending the war and brings “good ideas” to the table for a peaceful resolution.

Addressing a crowd in Moscow, Putin described PM Modi as one of the few world leaders who has continually pressed the issue despite Russia and India’s warm bilateral ties. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of those world leaders who, despite our very good and even friendly relations, personal good relations, constantly raises the question and asks the question about putting an end to the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.

“We are thankful for his ideas”

Putin went on to credit PM Modi with an active, sustained interest in finding a workable path to peace. “He has an avid interest and very good ideas aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions. And we are thankful to the Prime Minister for his ideas,” he said, thanking Modi for his continued support in pursuing a resolution through dialogue.

    India’s long-running balancing act

Modi has repeatedly called for an end to the war since the conflict began, framing India’s position as a principled, humanitarian one rather than a partisan stance. India has maintained extensive ties with both Moscow and Kyiv throughout the war, continuing large-scale purchases of Russian oil even as Western nations curtailed their own imports — a dynamic that has periodically strained India’s relationship with Washington, including earlier US tariff action tied to India’s Russia trade.

Modi and Putin have engaged repeatedly on the issue over the course of the conflict, including meetings on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, phone calls around diplomatic milestones, and continued dialogue even as ceasefire proposals have come and gone. Putin’s latest remarks add to a running pattern of Russian officials publicly acknowledging India’s diplomatic efforts, even as a durable resolution to the war has remained elusive.
