Members of the AIADMK rushed to the podium of both the Houses waving copies of the Monday edition of The Pioneer, a prominent daily which had come out with an exclusive detailed report about the findings of the Enforcement Directorate and Intelligence wing of the Income Tax department which had raided the offices of Karti Chidambaram  late last year.

The AIADMK members wanted the immediate arrest of Karti and did not yield to the requests of the chair in both the Houses to return to their seats. They also ignored the request made by M Venkaiah Naidu, Parliamentary Affairs Minister to raise the issue after giving notice. “We want justice,” shouted the MPs of the AIADMK, the third largest party in the Lok Sabha.

The Question Hour in the Lok Sabha was interrupted because of slogan shouting by the MPs. The Speaker was forced to adjourn the House twice in the morning. When the House met again at 3 pm, the AIADMK members continued their protest and the Speaker adjourned the House for the Day. The same pattern was visibe in the Rajya Sabha which adjourned three times. When the Upper House met again at 3.45 pm too the AIADMK members were not in a mood to listen to the pleas of the deputy chairman P J Kurian who described the situation as a “murder of democracy”. Later he adjourned the House for the day.

Azad could not move the motion amidst the din in the House.

The report in The Pioneer had said that Karti Chidambaram had built a huge business empire for himself in different parts of the world by making investment in real estates and engaging in other business activities in London, Dubai, South Africa, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, British Virgin Island, France, USA, Switzerland, Greece and Spain. “This came to light from the documents recovered during the recent joint raids of the Enforcement Directorate and Investigation Wing of Income Tax in the Aircel-Maxis scam,” said the Pioneer in its report.

According to the newspaper, described as India’s second oldest daily having started its publication in 1865, the investigation team got the details of Karti’s wealth following raids on his company, Advantage Strategic Consulting, which is involved in the Aircel-Maxis deal for financial transactions with telecom beneficiaries.
