Congress into damage control mode amid backlash over Sam Pitroda’s comments on wealth redistribution

After Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) Chairman Sam Pitroda‘s statement over inheritance tax in America, the BJP launched a scathing attack on Congress.

Facing the heat, the grand old party distanced itself saying that it is not always the case that Pitroda’s views reflect the position of the Congress and many times his views are not those of the party.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that Pitroda’s views do not always reflect the position of the Congress.

A video of Pitroda surfaced on social media platforms on Wednesday where he talked about inheritance tax in America.

The video triggered an outrage and the BJP slammed Congress over Pitroda’s remarks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called out the agenda of the Congress saying that “dangerous intentions of the Congress Party are now being exposed”.

PM Modi said while addressing a poll rally at Chhattisgarh’s Surguja, “The advisor of the prince of the Congress royal family had earlier said that the middle class should be taxed more. Now they have gone further ahead. Now Congress is saying that it will impose an Inheritance Tax and tax the inheritance received by people from their parents.”

PM Modi further said, “Your children will not get the wealth that you accumulate through your hard work, rather the claws of the Congress government will snatch it away from you. That means Congress’s mantra is – Congress’s loot during life and even after life. As long as you live, Congress will hit you with higher taxes.”

According to Pitroda, a 55 percent inheritance tax is levied in America and the government takes a 55 percent share. He said that property should be left to the public. “If a person has property worth US dollars 10 million, then after his death, 45 percent of the property goes to his children and 55 percent of the property goes to the government,” Pitroda said and added that there is no such law in India.

“Such issues should be discussed. We are talking about policies that are in the interest of the people, not just the rich,” said Pitroda.

  1. The frightening thing is this – when the Cong gets elected, they do exactly what they promised to do. But the BJP? They talk about Hindus when they come around begging for votes, but once elected – they forget the base. If the PM were really serious about Hindus, why did his Govt not address important issues like Govt control of Hindu temples and RTE. Instead, when elections are due he talks about “people who have more children” etc. As if this is really an issue!
