Battle for Sheikh Shahjahan’s custody ends with intense drama

After knocking on the doors of the Supreme Court and displaying reluctancy in handing over the Sandeshkhali case to CBI, the Mamata-led Bengal government got a jolt from the apex court, which rejected its plea for a stay on the Calcutta High Court‘s decision to transfer the case to CBI.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday evening finally got the physical custody of Sheikh Shahjahan, the accused mastermind behind the attack on ED and CAPF teams at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on January 5.

The handover reluctance drama by the Bengal government was on for the past 2 days, even after the Calcutta High Court’s order to hand over Sheikh Shahjahan on the same day to CBI.

Soon after the Calcutta High Court directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal police to hand over Shahjahan to the custody of CBI by 4.15 p.m. on Wednesday, a central agency team reached the CID headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in Kolkata, where Shahjahan was housed since his arrest on February 29.

However, the CBI team had to wait for over three hours to get Shahjahan’s physical custody.

The CID officers took Shahjahan to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital for a medical check-up after which he was handed over to the CBI team after at around 7 p.m.

From Bhabani Bhavan, Shahjahan was first taken to the Central government-run E.S.I. Hospital in Joka for a second round of medical check-ups. After the medical examination, he will be taken to CBI’s Nizam Palace office in central Kolkata.

A visibly shattered Shahjahan could be spotted sitting silently in the backseat of one of the vehicles in the convoy.

On Tuesday, a CBI team went to the Bhabani Bhavan to take Shahjahan into custody after the Calcutta High Court directed the CID to hand the accused over to the central agency at the earliest.

However, the CBI officers were left empty-handed from the Bhabani Bhavan, as the state government had by then moved the Supreme Court challenging the high court order.

  1. CBI to quickly take out juice of him, to drown the Mumtaz Begum

Strange…. original Mughal Shahjahan is relieved with this new version of Sheikh Shajan & his favorite Mumtaz Begum. Both are made for each other. Mumtaz Begum will go any distance to protect her partner & mentor, without building Taj Mahal

  2. The accused having been medically examined at two hospitals will have conflicting reports to go the the courts. All such cases of government interests should be moved out of state for fair investigations and trails, if it could be done for Shah why not all others?
