Amritsar Nihang clash: SHO Manjit Kaur manhandled while rescuing man from rival group

A woman SHO was manhandled by a group of Nihangs while rescuing a man from a rival faction who was being beaten with swords and rods during a clash on Jhabal Road in Amritsar

A clash between rival Nihang groups turned violent on Jhabal Road, under the jurisdiction of Gate Hakiman Police Station in Amritsar, on Friday night, after nearly two dozen Nihangs sitting on a protest dharna caught a man from an opposing group and beat him severely. Police reached the spot after being alerted, and Station House Officer Manjit Kaur stepped in among the protesters herself to try to prevent a larger confrontation from breaking out.

A Rescue That Turned Physical

Manjit Kaur attempted to free the young Nihang from the protesters, but they refused to let him go. He was attacked with drawn swords, rods and other weapons even as she tried to pull him clear. She eventually managed to get hold of him and break him free from the group’s grip, but the protesters kept attacking him even then. The SHO ultimately succeeded in getting him into her official vehicle and away from the scene — but in the process, the Nihangs also scuffled and manhandled her directly.

What Sparked The Clash

Nihang Kartar Singh said the confrontation traces back to an earlier, unresolved dispute: a few days prior, members of a rival faction led by one Major Singh allegedly opened fire on his men, and police took no action on the matter. On the night of the clash, Kartar Singh’s group was sitting on the dharna when men from Major Singh’s group were allegedly conducting reconnaissance nearby. His group caught the person allegedly carrying out the recce — the same individual who was then beaten — but rather than police taking action against him, Kartar Singh said, the SHO instead took him away.
