Mysore-Darbhanga Express train crashes into goods train Near Chennai, 19 injured
Nineteen passengers were injured when the Bagmati Express (Train No. 12578) derailed at Kavaraipettai on the night of October 11, prompting immediate hospitalization for those affected. Four passengers were reported to be in serious condition.
The Southern Railway has initiated a high-level investigation into the incident, which occurred when the train, traveling from Mysuru to Darbhanga in Bihar, collided with a stationary goods train at approximately 8:30 PM.
The collision caused twelve coaches of the Bagmati Express to derail, and a parcel van caught fire, though fire and rescue services were able to extinguish the blaze. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) quickly arrived at the scene to assist with rescue operations.
Sources within the Railways indicated that a signal failure may have led to the accident. Despite receiving a green signal to proceed on the main line, the train, traveling at 75 km/h, inadvertently entered the loop line and struck the rear of the stationary goods train. The express train had just passed Ponneri railway station at 8:27 PM.
A statement from Southern Railway explained, “While entering Kavaraipettai station, the train crew experienced a heavy jerk and mistakenly entered the loop line instead of proceeding onto the main line as signaled.”
Railway officials confirmed that the train crew was unharmed, and the fire in the parcel van was successfully extinguished. “As of now, no fatalities have been reported, but several injuries have occurred, and all the injured have been transported to nearby hospitals,” an official stated.
Train services in both directions were disrupted as a result of the derailment, and alternative arrangements are being made to transport passengers. This incident in Southern Railway echoes the tragic Balasore derailment in Odisha on June 2, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 290 passengers and injuries to over 900.
