Bajrang Dal sparks controversy amid Diljit Dosanjh’s Indore concert
The Bajrang Dal staged protests on Saturday against Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming concert in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, scheduled for Sunday, December 8. Citing concerns over alcohol consumption, meat service, and potential threats to cultural values, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) member Yash Bachani warned of intensified demonstrations if their demands were not met.
Bajrang Dal’s concerns and protests
Bachani claimed that reports of open liquor consumption and meat service at the concert prompted their action. “We oppose the serving of liquor and meat to protect the city’s culture. Bajrang Dal might take to the streets tomorrow if necessary,” he said. The group also voiced concerns over women’s safety and the potential for “Love Jihad” incidents.
On Saturday, Bajrang Dal members were seen chanting slogans like “Jai Jai Shri Ram” and “Desh ka Bal, Bajrang Dal.” A member described the protest as “a trailer” while promising “the whole film” if their demands were not met.
Police response and security measures
Indore’s Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amrendra Singh assured that the police are closely monitoring the situation. “We have not permitted open alcohol consumption at the venue. Law and order, women’s safety, and drug-related concerns are being addressed,” Singh stated.
Black marketing crackdown
Meanwhile, Indore Police arrested two individuals involved in black marketing concert tickets. According to DCP Crime Branch Rajesh Tripathi, the accused were caught selling tickets worth Rs.4,000 to Rs.5,000 for Rs.10,000. “We are continuously monitoring the situation and have seized five tickets so far,” Tripathi confirmed.
Previous protests in Pune
This isn’t the first instance of protests against Diljit’s concerts. Earlier, the Maharashtra state excise department revoked permission to serve alcohol at Dosanjh’s Pune concert following objections from local organizations, BJP leaders, and the NCP youth wing.
Dil-Luminati India Tour success
Despite controversies, Diljit’s Dil-Luminati India Tour 2024 has been a nationwide success. The tour kicked off in New Delhi in October and has drawn massive audiences across major cities, including Kolkata (November 30), Bengaluru (December 6), and Pune (November 24).
At his Bengaluru concert, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone was spotted in the audience, receiving a warm on-stage shoutout from Diljit. Earlier in Pune, actress Nimrat Kaur was also seen enjoying the live performance.
Upcoming concerts
The Dil-Luminati Tour continues with concerts in Chandigarh on December 14 and Guwahati on December 29, cementing Diljit Dosanjh’s status as one of India’s most popular live performers despite mounting challenges from various groups.
