Bharti Airtel follows Jio, hikes the price of of 15 prepaid and postpaid plans
Soon after Reliance Jio hiked the tariff, Bharti Airtel announced a rise in tariff rates by 10-21%. The revised tariff plans will be effective from July 3.
Earlier, Reliance Jio revised tariffs from 12% to 25% on its mobile plans, marking the first increase in prices since December 2021.
The mobile tariff hike from mobile operators comes immediately after the 10th spectrum auction, which ended in just two days with a muted response from the industry.
Bharti Airtel has increased the price of its entry-level plans by 70 paise, ‘in order to eliminate any burden on budget-challenged consumers.’
It must be noted here that while the plans have become costlier, benefits like data, call minutes, etc remain the same.
In total, Airtel has increased the price of 15 prepaid and postpaid plans. These prices apply to all circles, including Bharti Hexacom Ltd. Circles.
Bharti Airtel said in its statement, “We have ensured that there is a very modest price increase (less than 70p per day) on the entry level plans, in order to eliminate any burden on budget challenged consumers.”
Bharti Airtel said it has maintained that the mobile Average Revenue per User (ARPU) needs to be upwards of Rs.300, to enable a financially healthy business model for telcos in India. “We believe that this level of ARPU will enable the substantial investments required in network technology and spectrum and offer a modest return on capital.”
Coming to Airtel’s postpaid plans, the price now ranges from Rs.449 to Rs.1,199. Daily data plans offering up to 3GB data per day now come with starting price of Rs.265.
The revised tariff increases the price of Rs.179 monthly plan to Rs.199. The plan will continue to offer 2GB mobile data per day, unlimited calling and 100 SMS per day. Validity of the plan remains 28 days. Similarly, the annual plan of Rs.1,799 offering 2GB mobile data per day, unlimited calling and 100 SMSes every day will now cost Rs.1,999. Airtel’s daily data add-on plans now come at Rs.22 onwards (a hike of Rs.3 from the previous Rs.19).
