Stampede at Siddheshwar Nath temple: Chaos erupted when force was allegedly used to manage the crowd

At least seven people, including six women, were dead, and over a dozen people were injured in a stampede at Baba Siddheshwar Nath Temple located at Vanavar hills in Bihar’s Jehanabad district on early Monday morning.

The incident occurred at around 1:00 a.m. on the fourth Monday of the holy Sawan month, during which devotees in large numbers throng Shiv temples to pay obeisance to Lord Shiva.

The chaos reportedly erupted when force was allegedly used to manage the crowd, leading to the deadly crush. At least 35 others sustained injuries in the incident.

Police along with the relief and rescue team rushed to the spot after receiving the information about the incident.

Those injured were immediately admitted to the Sadar Hospital.

Authorities have denied any negligence in the handling of the situation. Diwakar Kumar Vishwakarma, Town Inspector of Jehanabad, confirmed that the bodies of the seven victims have been brought to the Jehanabad Post-mortem House for examination. The incident has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede and the management of the temple event.

The devotees had gathered at the temple for a consecration event held every year during the holy month of Shravan. Visuals from Jehanabad showed inconsolable families mourning their loss and the injured being treated at the local Makhdumpur and Sadar hospitals.

“Those present at the temple said there was a stampede due to lack of arrangements by the administration. Some NCC (National Cadet Corps) volunteers engaged in crowd management used ‘lathis‘ on the devotees, which led to the stampede,” the relative of a victim told reporters.
