Nitin Nabin set to become BJP national president as sole candidate

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday cleared the way for Nitin Nabin to become its next national president after all 37 sets of nomination papers filed in his support were found to be valid.

Announcing the development, BJP Returning Officer K Laxman said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the proposers of Nabin’s candidature. The Patna MLA emerged as the sole candidate for the party’s top organisational post following the scrutiny process.

According to a party statement, the election process for the BJP national president was initiated after the completion of organisational elections in 30 out of 36 states and Union Territories, exceeding the minimum requirement of 50 per cent.

“For the post of national president, a total of 37 sets of nomination papers were received in support of Shri Nitin Nabin. After scrutiny, all nomination papers were found to be valid and in the prescribed format,” the BJP said.

With no other nominations filed, Laxman formally declared Nitin Nabin as the only candidate in the fray after the withdrawal period ended.

“After the completion of the nomination withdrawal period, I hereby declare that only one name has been proposed for the post of BJP national president, namely Shri Nitin Nabin,” the statement added.

Several senior BJP leaders, including party chief J P Nadda and Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, were also among the proposers of Nabin’s candidature.

The formal announcement and assumption of office are expected on Tuesday, January 20, following the completion of the remaining procedural formalities.
