In the absence of an acceptable local face, the floating voters can be swayed by any number of local issues and attractions.

Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) can not win and should not face a state election without a Strong State Leader whom the people can identify with in some way as a person who can deliver their aspirations. This is the primary reason for its defeat in the Delhi elections.

38.51 is a good percentage for a vote share but these are the core voters. When there is a common face against BJP, then, this person starts with about 25% assured votes from Muslims, Christians, communists and such like who will not only never vote for BJP but are also keen to support the candidate with the maximum possibility of winning.

In the absence of a suitable face for the BJP what particular reason was there for rejecting him. If not anything else, they can even abuse him at will or even be entertained by his antics.

Arvind Kejriwal outsmarted BJP. He sensed that Muslims, Christians, and communists will vote for him in any case. He did just enough to speak the right things about the Ayodhya verdict and succeeded in projecting himself as the friendly approachable neighborhood politician. After all, he was giving them free electricity, bus travel, and whatnot.

This equation will repeat in every state election. Maharashtra was not the same. BJP could possibly have won if they had stood on their own. That was perhaps a strategic mistake.

Karnataka scraped through becauseBookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa (BSY) managed to organize the cadre as well as assimilate the relevant MLAs from the other parties. Again, a capable local leader delivered, by also being the local face for the party that people could relate to.

Given the fact that the entire opposition can be united against them or that there can be a strong local face like Mamata Banerjee who will get the 25% assured vote from the nexus of communal forces, the least requirement is for a BJP CM candidate whom the people of the state can identify with.

  1. The loss in Delhi for BJP is because of the middle class unfriendly lop sided budget. A large percentage of voters are salaried class and their dependents. The two streams of IT teturns, people felt were to confuse them and make them pay more IT.Why limit is put to 5 lakhs when OBC creamy layer limit is 10 lakhs. Only 7 percent of people in the country pay IT and the total IT receipt is than what govt gets from Spectrum sales .It is better for the government to make the limits to 10 lakhs and broaden the tax base by bringing tax avoiding high earning crooks into IT net

  2. Point well taken. Mr.Amit Shah should implement this for all state elections. The loss of Delhi elections was felt by me as a big kick in the face of any Hindu & patriotic person. BJP should have their ears to the ground always.

  3. It is not about CM face. It is just about Modi & Shah hubris. They don’t like state level leaders to gain prominence. See how they tried to destroy Shivraj in MP, Vasundhara in Rajasthan. Local elections need to be fought on local issues. Modi & Shah chant only Nationalism mantra for all elections including panchayat and municipal elections. That is highly counter productive and results are there to see. How could they call Kejriwal a terrorist? Kejriwal is an unscrupulous politician but not a terrorist by any stretch of imagination.
