CBI notes several lapses in the initial police investigation of RG Kar’s case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has uncovered significant contradictions in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case involving the rape and murder of a female doctor. The discrepancies include inconsistencies between the post-mortem report and the seizure list prepared by the Kolkata Police.
The initial investigation was conducted by the Kolkata Police before the case was transferred to the CBI following a Supreme Court order. According to sources, standard protocol requires that police provide forensic teams with details of the victim’s clothing at the time of body recovery. However, the CBI has identified conflicting information between the post-mortem report and the seizure list.
The post-mortem report indicates that the victim’s lower garments were missing, yet the seizure list includes references to jeans and female innerwear. This discrepancy has raised questions among CBI investigators about whether these contradictions are due to negligence or if they suggest a more deliberate intent.
The CBI has already noted several lapses in the initial police investigation, and these recent findings add to the concerns. Investigators are particularly scrutinizing the hasty cremation of the victim’s body, which occurred despite requests from the victim’s family to delay the process. This issue was highlighted in a statement from Governor CV Ananda Bose late Monday.
Governor Bose’s statement from Raj Bhavan pointed to several troubling issues: misinformation provided to the victim’s family, potential tampering with the crime scene, delays in filing the FIR, and the immediate transfer of the then-Principal of RG Kar Medical College. These issues, coupled with alleged attempts to cover up evidence, have fueled public skepticism regarding the integrity of the state’s handling of the case.
The CBI continues its investigation, focusing on these inconsistencies and the overall conduct of the initial investigation.
