BJP dominates Rajasthan civic polls, but Congress springs a surprise in Jhalawar

Congress has secured a clear majority in the Jhalawar Municipal Council, winning 29 of 45 wards in what has long been considered former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje‘s political stronghold. The BJP managed just 13 wards, while two Independents and one AAP candidate also won seats, as counting concluded in Rajasthan’s urban local body elections on Sunday.

The result carries outsized political weight because of where it happened. Jhalrapatan, Raje’s own Assembly constituency, and Jhalawar-Baran, the Lok Sabha seat currently held by her son Dushyant Singh, both fall within this district — territory the BJP has dominated for decades. Congress’s win here is being read locally as a symbolic breakthrough rather than just another municipal result, even though the party’s broader showing across the state’s civic polls was far more modest.

The Bigger Picture: BJP Still Leads Overall

Elsewhere in the state, the BJP maintained a strong grip on urban local bodies, leading Congress 8-1 in municipal corporation results as counting progressed. The BJP won 17 wards in the Jaipur Municipal Corporation against Congress’s six, and took 13 wards in Udaipur to Congress’s seven. Congress did pick up leads in Dungarpur and Sikar Nagar Parishads, and the two parties were locked in a tight contest in Jhalawar Nagar Parishad, a separate civic body also associated with Raje, before Congress ultimately pulled ahead.

Not The First Time

This isn’t unfamiliar territory for the BJP to lose, either. The party previously lost the Jhalawar Municipal Council and Jhalrapatan Municipality after 15 years of control during a set of civic polls held under Raje’s own chief ministership, alongside losses in the Baran Municipal Council and Anta Municipality — both falling under Dushyant Singh’s Lok Sabha seat.
