Sarma stands firm against infiltrators amid Owaisi complaint row

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday struck back at what he described as a coordinated Congress smear campaign, filing a Rs 500-crore defamation suit against senior party leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel, and Gaurav Gogoi for making what he termed “false, malicious and defamatory” allegations over his land holdings.

Announcing the legal action in a post on X, Sarma said the Congress leaders had deliberately attempted to mislead the public through a press conference without producing a shred of credible evidence.

“Today, I have filed a defamation case seeking Rs 500 crore in damages against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against me,” the Chief Minister stated.

Congress claims without proof

The lawsuit follows a press conference held on February 4 by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, who claimed that the party’s so-called “investigation” had found that nearly 12,000 bighas of land across Assam were allegedly occupied by the Chief Minister and his family.

The Assam CM dismissed the claims outright, pointing out that the Congress failed to provide documents, survey records, or legal evidence to back its explosive accusations. Within hours of the press conference, Sarma had warned that legal action would follow— a promise that materialised on Tuesday.

Observers note that the timing and nature of the allegations suggest a politically motivated hit job, aimed at sensational headlines rather than facts, especially as the Congress struggles to regain relevance in Assam.

Escalation to communal allegations

Not content with land-related claims, Gogoi further escalated his rhetoric in a separate press interaction on Monday, accusing Sarma of “inciting genocide” against Muslims—an allegation the Chief Minister’s supporters have called reckless, inflammatory, and deeply irresponsible.

Legal experts say such accusations, when made without evidence, carry serious consequences and cannot be brushed aside as routine political criticism.

Sarma responds to Owaisi complaint

In a parallel development, Sarma reacted strongly to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s complaint to Hyderabad City Police over a now-deleted video allegedly showing “genocidal hate speech.”

The Assam CM made it clear that he would not retract his position on illegal immigration.

“I am ready to go to jail. Arrest me if a case has been filed. I have no objection. But I stand by my words—I am against Bangladeshi infiltrators and I will continue to be against them,” Sarma said.

He added that opposing illegal infiltration was a matter of national security, not communal hatred—a distinction he said his critics deliberately blur for political gain.

Political accountability vs propaganda

The defamation suit marks one of the strongest legal pushbacks by a sitting Chief Minister against opposition leaders, sending a clear message that unsubstantiated allegations and political propaganda will be met with accountability.

As the legal battle unfolds, the spotlight now shifts to whether the Congress leaders can substantiate their claims in court—or face the consequences of what the Assam CM has termed a deliberate campaign of lies.
