Assam CM accuses Congress of using ‘foreign-sourced fake material’; FIR filed over defamation claims

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday launched a fierce attack on the Indian National Congress, accusing it of running a “malicious and foreign-linked misinformation campaign” after party leaders targeted his wife with serious allegations during the election season.

The controversy erupted after Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi, claimed that Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, held multiple passports and controlled massive overseas assets.

‘Congress using Pakistan-linked material’: Sarma

Hitting back strongly, Sarma alleged that the Congress campaign was based on content sourced from a Pakistani social media network.

“During our research, we found that the entire material of the press conference was supplied by a Pakistani social media group,” he said.

He further claimed that Pakistani media had unusually amplified the Assam elections, with multiple discussions allegedly favouring the Congress — a development he described as “deeply suspicious” and indicative of a coordinated narrative-building effort.

FIR filed, legal warning issued

Sarma confirmed that his wife has filed an FIR over what he termed “fabricated and defamatory allegations,” warning of strict legal consequences for those involved.

He said the use of allegedly forged documents to influence elections could attract severe punishment under provisions related to cheating and forgery in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“When fraudulent documents are used to influence an election outcome, it can invite stringent punishment, even life imprisonment,” he said.

‘Fake companies, manufactured evidence’

Dismissing the Congress claims outright, Sarma accused the party of creating false narratives using easily generated foreign registrations.

“Anyone can register a company by paying a small fee. After the press conference, they even created another company in Riniki’s name,” he alleged.

He maintained that documents presented by Congress leaders, including passport details, were “fabricated” and sourced from dubious foreign entities.

Political heat rises ahead of polls

The sharp exchange comes ahead of Assembly elections in Assam, scheduled for April 9, intensifying the political battle between the BJP and Congress.

Sarma’s remarks signal an aggressive counteroffensive by the BJP, framing the controversy as not just a political attack but an attempt to malign individuals using questionable and foreign-linked sources.
