UP Police now seek fugitive’s arrest and extradition to India

Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against fugitive gangster Shariq Sata, whom Uttar Pradesh Police have identified as the mastermind and prime conspirator behind the violence that erupted in Sambhal on November 24, 2024.

Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said Sata had earlier been declared a fugitive offender by a court, with proceedings initiated for attachment of his property. Following the completion of the required formalities, the Uttar Pradesh Police approached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which subsequently coordinated with Interpol for the international notice.

According to police, Sata fled to Dubai using a forged passport and has remained outside India. Investigators prepared a detailed dossier on his alleged role in the Sambhal violence and his wider criminal record before submitting it to the CBI.

Police said efforts will now be made to locate and provisionally arrest Sata in the country where he is found and seek his extradition to India. He is wanted in connection with the Sambhal violence as well as around 55 to 60 other criminal cases registered across Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region, according to the police.

Sata was already under lookout notice

Multiple police raids had earlier failed to trace Sata. Following this, authorities pasted a notice under Section 84 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at his residence. A lookout circular had also been issued against him.

Police have alleged that Sata was involved in organised criminal activities, including vehicle thefts, while operating from abroad. His family members have also frequently travelled to Dubai, according to the police.

What happened during the Sambhal violence?

Violence broke out in Sambhal on November 24, 2024, when protesters clashed with security forces during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The survey followed claims that a Harihar temple had previously stood at the site.

Four people were killed and dozens were injured during the violence.

During the subsequent investigation, Uttar Pradesh Police identified Sata as a prime conspirator in the case. He had reportedly left India years earlier and has remained absconding since.

What is a Red Corner Notice?

A Red Corner Notice is an international request circulated by Interpol to law-enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence. Importantly, it is not an international arrest warrant; individual countries decide what action to take under their own laws.
