Devendra Fadnavis set for third stint as Maharashtra Chief Minister
BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is set to be sworn in today as the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra, bringing an end to the political impasse that followed the MahaYuti alliance’s victory in the state’s November 20 Assembly elections.
The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 5 pm at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan and will be attended by key BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Fadnavis, aged 54, will begin his third term as Chief Minister. He previously held the position from October 2014 to November 2019, becoming the youngest Chief Minister in Maharashtra’s history at 44.
His second tenure, however, was brief, lasting only five days from November 23 to 28, 2019, following a fallout between the BJP and its ally, the Shiv Sena.
In addition to Fadnavis, two Deputy Chief Ministers will also take the oath today. Among them are Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar, and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde.
Fadnavis emerged as the frontrunner for the top post after the BJP secured 132 seats in the state elections, its highest-ever tally. The Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, and the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.
In preparation for the ceremony, security measures in Mumbai have been heightened. Joint Police Commissioner Satya Narayan Choudhary confirmed that a robust security deployment plan has been implemented, involving 5 additional commissioners, 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police, 700 officers, and more than 4,000 personnel. Specialized units, including teams from the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Quick Response Team (QRT), and Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, are also on standby to maintain law and order.
Traffic diversions are in place around the venue, and police have urged attendees to use public transport, as parking is unavailable at Azad Maidan. To further ensure safety, around 8,000 CCTV cameras will be monitored during the event.
