Hyderabad: Unidentified individuals vandalized the Murti of Devi Durga at Nampally Exhibition Grounds

In a disturbing incident, unidentified miscreants vandalized a Goddess Durga idol at the Nampally Exhibition Grounds in Hyderabad. The attack is believed to have taken place late Thursday night, only coming to light when organizers visited the site on Friday morning.

Upon receiving reports of the vandalism, a team from the Begum Bazar Police Station quickly arrived at the scene. The incident has triggered significant tension, prompting organizers to voice their outrage and demand immediate and stringent action against the perpetrators.

The idol, which is a central feature of the Devi Sharan Navaratri celebrations organized annually by the All India Industrial Exhibition Society, was found with its hand broken, and surrounding decorations, including the saree, were strewn across the ground. Organizers suspect that the act was premeditated, as the miscreants are believed to have cut off the electricity and disabled CCTV cameras prior to the vandalism. A security guard stationed near the idol was reportedly away at the time of the incident.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Abids) A Chandrasekhar confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

This incident marks the second vandalism case involving a Durga idol in Hyderabad within the last two months. On August 27, the idol at the Bhoolaxmi temple was similarly attacked, leading to the arrest of two individuals under the influence of alcohol.

Local BJP leaders have criticized the recurring nature of such incidents, alleging a pattern over the past five years where police often attribute the vandalism to intoxicated individuals or those with mental instability.

The Exhibition Society, which has been hosting Dussehra festivities at the venue for many years, expressed deep anger and disappointment over the desecration of the idol, calling for heightened security measures in the future.
