Coaches A-1, B-2 and B-5 sustained cracked and shattered window panes; one passenger suffered minor injuries

A stone-pelting incident on the Nagpur-Mumbai CSMT Duronto Express left one passenger with minor injuries after window panes on three air-conditioned coaches were shattered late Friday night, prompting alarm among travellers before the train continued on to Mumbai.

The incident occurred as Train No. 12290 was travelling at high speed between Borkhedi and Sindi stations in Maharashtra on the night of September 25. According to Indian Railways, the train had passed through Borkhedi station at around 8:27 pm when an unidentified person or group hurled stones or blunt objects from trackside scrubland toward the moving train.

Three coaches hit, one passenger injured

The impact damaged coaches A-1, B-2 and B-5, cracking and shattering their outer window panes. Escort staff and passengers on board confirmed that the objects struck the train while it was moving at speed. One passenger reportedly sustained minor scratches from flying glass splinters; railway authorities said no serious injuries were reported among travellers.

A passenger identified as Kunal, who was travelling on the train, said the stones appeared to have been thrown near Gondkhairi, though the exact location has not been officially confirmed. He said coaches A1 and B2 were affected by the incident.

Part of a recurring pattern on this stretch

This is not the first such incident involving the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express. In August 2026, a separate stone-pelting attack near Igatpuri shattered a windowpane in the train’s A-1 coach; the Railway Protection Force subsequently arrested a suspect, a repeat offender previously booked in 2023 under the Railways Act, who confessed to the act during questioning.

Stone-pelting incidents targeting moving trains have been reported periodically across the Indian Railways network, including on the Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi Express and the Jaynagar-New Delhi Swatantrata Senani Express, typically prosecuted under provisions of the Railways Act.

Investigation underway

Railway Protection Force personnel are investigating Friday’s incident to identify those responsible. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact location of the stone-pelting or made any arrests in connection with this latest attack.
