On Wednesday External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar held talks with Iranian counterpart Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian who is on his visit to India. They both reviewed bilateral ties including trade, connectivity, health, and people-to-people connections.

During the delegation-level talks, the two Foreign Ministers also discussed the bilateral relations while stating that bilateral relations between both the countries are marked by strong linkages across institutions, culture, and people-to-people ties.

India and Iran discussed the progress made at Iran’s Shahid Beheshti Terminal, Chabahar Port, and its connectivity in the region.

A statement from a press release of the Ministry of External Affairs read, “The sides agreed that the Chabahar Port has provided much-needed sea access to landlocked Afghanistan and has also emerged as a commercial transit hub for the region, including for Central Asia.”

Reaffirming their commitment to continue to cooperate on the development of Chabahar Port, the ministry said that the teams from both countries will be meeting soon to address operational aspects of the Chabahar Port in the middle east country.

Speaking on Afghanistan, India and Iran reaffirmed the significance of providing immediate humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan and reiterated the need for a representative and inclusive political system in support of a peaceful, secure and stable Afghanistan.

  1. This is a good article, written with positive intent.

Our EAM has ben doing a great job, balancing India’s interests and the sensitivities of the other countries on all issues, incl Russia-Ukraine war and the recent Nupur Sharma controversy. He is surely the best of EAMs India has had so far.

There are lots of WhatsApp messages doing the rounds, some criticising the Govt and some chest-thumping about how we gave right back to the US, Europe, NATO, and Islamic countries. In a noisy and vibrant democracy like ours, these are par for the course.

As a responsible Government, External Affairs Ministry is playing its cards very well. I think the foreign Governments who are in talks with us also understand/ realize the situation. Even as they may make some noises to please their political and religious constituencies, they are working with our Government behind the scenes where necessary, to take the relationships forward in the best interests of both the sides.

Opposition parties want to politicise the issues and hurt the Modi Government. They don’t care if it will hurt India’s interests.

Neither bashing the Government nor chest-thumping is fair or right. Balanced Indians should desist from writing or speaking anything that will create problems for the Government and the nation, and back the Government which works with the best of intentions.
