Jaishankar meets Sullivan, NSA Philip Gordon

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in a “productive” meeting with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Wednesday, as part of his visit to Washington. He also met with Philip Gordon, the National Security Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris, who is a potential candidate for the role if she wins the presidential nomination.

Reflecting on his discussions, Jaishankar noted on X, “As always, a productive conversation on bilateral cooperation and good insights into global politics.” A White House summary of the meeting is expected soon.

In another post, Jaishankar expressed appreciation for his conversation with Gordon, highlighting their discussions on bilateral ties and global developments.

Gordon shared details of their meeting, stating, “Great to meet this week with Minister Dr S Jaishankar of India. We took stock of important progress in the U.S.-India relationship, including our growing defense and technology cooperation.” The two also addressed regional security issues spanning the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe.

Jaishankar’s visit follows a series of meetings with top Biden administration officials after addressing the UN General Assembly in New York. On Tuesday, he met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, with discussions centering on the commitment to deepen bilateral ties, coordinate on regional and global challenges, and enhance cooperation on critical technologies.

The State Department noted that Blinken emphasized the significance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s August visit to Kyiv, reiterating the need for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. India’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to engage both Moscow and Kyiv have drawn attention, positioning New Delhi as a key player in facilitating dialogue amid the conflict.

Additionally, Jaishankar and Blinken discussed plans to expand collaboration on clean energy initiatives to tackle the global climate crisis, marking a significant step in U.S.-India relations.
