The incident comes amid a series of protests targeting TMC leaders across West Bengal over local grievances and corruption allegations

Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and MLA Madan Mitra‘s convoy was allegedly targeted with eggs during a protest in the Ariadaha area of West Bengal’s Kamarhati constituency on Saturday.

The incident took place when Mitra visited the locality following reports of unrest. A group of residents reportedly gathered in protest, leading to a tense situation in the area.

According to initial reports, eggs were hurled at a vehicle believed to be part of the MLA’s convoy. The situation soon turned chaotic, prompting the convoy to leave the area.

Videos circulating on social media showed residents raising slogans and expressing their dissatisfaction as the convoy moved through the locality.

    Growing protests against TMC leaders

The incident is being viewed as part of a broader trend of public demonstrations involving Trinamool Congress leaders across West Bengal.

In recent weeks, residents in several districts have staged protests over allegations related to corruption, extortion and local governance issues. Demonstrations that were once largely confined to political rallies are increasingly being witnessed during visits by senior political leaders.

    Abhishek Banerjee also faced protests

The latest development comes days after TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee faced protests during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district.

During that visit, protesters allegedly threw eggs and stones while raising slogans against the senior leader. Videos from the scene showed residents confronting Banerjee and demanding answers on local issues.

Following the incident, Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating the protest and alleged that adequate police presence was missing at the location. Despite the confrontation, he later continued with his scheduled programme after receiving medical attention.

Police subsequently arrested five people in connection with the Sonarpur incident. Those arrested reportedly included Nirmal Sengupta, Debashish Datta and Kajal Das, who were alleged to be associates of former TMC MLA Lovely Maitra.

    Mamata Banerjee criticises BJP

Reacting to the attack on Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the BJP.

Sharing a video of the incident on social media, Banerjee accused the ruling party at the Centre of encouraging violence against opposition leaders.

“Rulers became killers — shame on you BJP,” she wrote in a post on X.

The latest protest in Kamarhati is expected to further intensify the political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP ahead of upcoming electoral battles in the state.
