Six years after Delhi riots, court convicts Tahir Hussain in Ankit Sharma killing
A Delhi court on Monday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain in the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma, one of the most high-profile cases arising from the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. The court also convicted several co-accused for their role in the killing, bringing a major legal milestone more than six years after the violence that shook the national capital.
Ankit Sharma was reported missing during the communal violence in February 2020, and his body was later recovered from a drain near Chand Bagh. The post-mortem examination had recorded multiple stab injuries, making the case one of the most closely watched investigations linked to the riots.
Court holds Hussain and others guilty
The trial court found Tahir Hussain guilty of offences related to the murder of the IB officer. The conviction follows years of investigation, witness testimonies and examination of evidence presented by the prosecution.
The quantum of sentence will be decided after a separate hearing, during which both the prosecution and the defence will present their arguments.
One of the most significant Delhi riots cases
The murder of Ankit Sharma became one of the defining cases of the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, which claimed more than 50 lives and left hundreds injured.
Investigators had alleged that Sharma was attacked by a mob during the violence, while the prosecution argued that Hussain played a central role in the conspiracy and execution of the crime. Hussain has consistently denied the allegations against him.
Sentencing to follow
With the conviction now pronounced, the court will hear arguments on sentencing before announcing the punishment for Hussain and the other convicts.
The verdict marks a significant development in one of the most prominent criminal cases stemming from the 2020 Delhi riots.
