Case filed after remarks on CM’s wife

In a setback to Pawan Khera, the Gauhati High Court has rejected his plea for anticipatory bail in a criminal case linked to remarks about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.

Khera, who heads the Congress party’s media and publicity department, had alleged in a press conference that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma held multiple foreign passports and undisclosed overseas assets.

Case filed over defamation and forgery charges

Following the allegations, Riniki Sharma filed a complaint at the Guwahati Crime Branch, leading to charges including cheating, defamation, forgery, and intentional insult.

The High Court, which had reserved its order earlier, rejected Khera’s anticipatory bail plea after hearing both sides.

    Legal battle spans multiple courts

Earlier, Assam Police had visited Khera’s Delhi residence in connection with the case. He subsequently approached the Telangana High Court, which granted him interim transit anticipatory bail for a week.

However, the Supreme Court of India later stayed that relief on April 15 after the Assam Police challenged the order.

The apex court had advised Khera to seek relief from a competent court in Assam, leading him to approach the Gauhati High Court.

    SC declines further relief

Khera also moved the Supreme Court again to vacate the stay on his transit bail, but the plea was rejected. The court reiterated that he should pursue legal remedies in Assam.
