Himanta Biswa Sarma starts second straight term in Assam
BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, marking the beginning of the BJP-led NDA government’s third straight tenure in the state.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and members of the new Council of Ministers at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.
Along with Sarma, four ministers also took oath, including representatives from NDA allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BJP national president Nitin Nabin. More than 40 NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers were also present at the event.
With this, Sarma became the first non-Congress leader in Assam to serve two consecutive terms as chief minister. He first assumed office in 2021 after succeeding Sarbananda Sonowal.
Senior NDA leaders on Tuesday offered prayers at the revered Kamakhya temple in Guwahati ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the third BJP-led government in Assam. Among those who paid obeisance to Goddess Kamakhya were Union minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar and Rajya Sabha MP Praful Patel.
The BJP-led NDA returned to power in Assam with a sweeping mandate in the Assembly elections, securing 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP alone won 82 seats, crossing the majority mark on its own for the first time in the state. NDA allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
The victory also marks the third consecutive term for the NDA in Assam since the BJP-led alliance first formed the government in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal.
