Ambassador Sergio Gor back in New Delhi
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor returned to New Delhi on Friday, saying the two countries stand before “incredible opportunities” as they look to deepen their partnership across strategic, economic and security domains.
In a brief post on X after his arrival, Gor wrote, “Great to be back in India! Incredible opportunities ahead for our two nations!” His return comes months after he was sworn in as the US Ambassador to India at the White House in November.
Gor is no stranger to New Delhi. Before assuming office, he visited India in October and held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. Those interactions, US officials have said, helped lay the groundwork for closer coordination between the two sides.
Following Gor’s swearing-in, US President Donald Trump underscored the importance Washington places on its relationship with India, describing it as one of America’s most significant international partnerships. Trump said Gor had been entrusted with strengthening strategic, economic and security cooperation with New Delhi and deepening what he called a “fantastic relationship” with Prime Minister Modi.
The US President also highlighted India’s global stature, pointing to its ancient civilisation, large population and growing influence, and said Gor had already built a strong rapport with Indian leadership even before formally taking charge.
After taking the oath of office, Gor thanked Trump for the confidence placed in him and said he looked forward to enhancing ties between the two countries and advancing shared interests.
In August, Trump had nominated Gor as the next US Ambassador to India as well as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. During his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in September, Gor described India as “one of the most important relationships” the United States has globally, signalling continuity in Washington’s focus on New Delhi.
