PM Boris Johnson calls for democracies, friends to stick together

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to arrive in India next week, with a state visit that highlights a successful India-UK partnership on the agenda besides a wide-ranging schedule in New Delhi.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s office said he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi would hold “in-depth talks” in Delhi on April 22 on their “strategic defence, diplomatic and economic partnership.”

Ahead of the meeting, Johnson said, “As we face threats to our peace and prosperity from autocratic states, it is vital that democracies and friends stick together.”

He added, “India, as a major economic power and the world’s largest democracy, is a highly valued strategic partner for the UK in these uncertain times. My visit to India will deliver on the things that really matter to the people of both our nations — from job creation and economic growth to energy security and defence.”

During the two-day visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Johnson will hold talks in New Delhi focusing on strengthening security cooperation between India and the UK in the Indo-Pacific region as well as strategic defence.

The UK has been keen on forging new trade pacts with leading economies since its exit from the European Union and the British government is focused on the speedy conclusion of a deal with India.

Johnson’s visit to India has been in the pipeline for several months. His two trips to India last year were called off in January, when he was to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations, due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in the UK, and in April, when India was hit by a deadly second wave.

  1. Britain has nothing to offer than lip service. Britain has no technology to share. It is a spent force. They are waste of time. Insist them to share black money details & Indian court decisions are to be respected by UK without further trails or raising right to….etc.., but nothing on right to persecute.
