Project 17A stealth frigate, built with 75% indigenous content, strengthens India’s naval combat capability
India took another major step towards defence self-reliance on Saturday as INS Mahendragiri, an advanced 75% indigenous stealth-guided missile frigate, was commissioned into the Indian Navy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inducted the warship into the Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam, describing it as a significant milestone in strengthening India’s maritime power and Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
INS Mahendragiri is the sixth Project 17A stealth frigate to join the Navy and has been designed with advanced stealth features, modern sensors and sophisticated weapon systems to enhance India’s combat capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
Rajnath Singh commissions advanced stealth frigate
Commissioning the warship at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, Rajnath Singh said India’s growing indigenous defence manufacturing capability is transforming the country’s military preparedness.
He noted that the induction of INS Mahendragiri reflects India’s commitment to building world-class defence platforms using domestic expertise and technology.
Built with 75% indigenous content
INS Mahendragiri has been constructed with nearly 75% indigenous content, making it one of the most advanced home-built warships in the Indian Navy.
Developed under Project 17A, the frigate features cutting-edge stealth technology, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile systems, advanced electronic warfare capabilities and an integrated sensor suite designed for multi-dimensional naval operations.
Major boost to India’s maritime strength
The warship will operate with the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet and significantly enhance India’s ability to undertake anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions.
Its induction comes amid India’s continued focus on strengthening maritime security and expanding its presence across the Indo-Pacific region.

The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri marks another milestone in India’s indigenous warship-building programme, reinforcing the government’s push for self-reliance in defence production.
