Anas al-Sharif among five Al Jazeera journalists killed by Israel in Gaza
At least five Al Jazeera journalists were killed on Sunday in an Israeli airstrike near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, according to the Qatar-based broadcaster. The victims included correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal.
The journalists were among seven people killed when an Israeli attack hit a tent for the press positioned outside the hospital’s main gate.
Israeli military confirms targeting al-Sharif
Shortly after the strike, the Israeli military acknowledged targeting Anas al-Sharif, labelling him a “terrorist” and claiming he led a Hamas cell responsible for planning rocket attacks. The IDF stated he had been “posing as a journalist” for Al Jazeera.

Al-Sharif, 28, had been one of Al Jazeera Arabic’s most prominent correspondents in Gaza. Moments before his death, he appeared to be reporting on intensified bombardments in Gaza City. A pre-written post, published after his death, read:
“If these words of mine reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice.”

Al Jazeera and CPJ condemn the attack
Al Jazeera confirmed that five of its staff members were killed in the targeted strike and condemned the attack as an assault on press freedom.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also condemned the killings, accusing Israel of repeatedly labelling journalists as militants without presenting credible evidence.
“Journalists are civilians and must never be targeted. Those responsible must be held accountable,” said CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator, Sara Qudah.
Tensions between Israel and Al Jazeera
Israel has long had a contentious relationship with Al Jazeera, banning the network inside the country and raiding its offices. The latest war in Gaza has further escalated hostilities, with Qatar — which funds Al Jazeera — hosting Hamas political leaders and facilitating indirect talks between the group and Israel.
The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate condemned the strike as a “bloody crime” and an act of assassination.
This latest incident adds to a grim toll — media watchdogs say around 200 journalists have been killed since the start of the 22-month Gaza war.
