Madani’s remarks on Al Falah trigger political storm

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Arshad Madani has sparked a political storm with remarks alleging discrimination against Muslims amid the ongoing investigation into the Delhi blast case.

His comments, which referenced the probe into Al Falah University and the imprisonment of politician Azam Khan, drew sharp reactions from BJP leaders who accused him of misleading and exploiting the Muslim community.

Madani questioned what he described as systemic bias against Muslims in India, contrasting it with the political rise of Muslim leaders abroad.

“Today, a Muslim, Mamdani, can become the mayor of New York. A ‘Khan’ can become the mayor of London. But in India, a Muslim cannot become the vice chancellor of a university. And if he does, he will end up in jail like Azam Khan. Look at what is happening in Al Falah,” Madani said.

The remarks come as Al Falah University, linked to several suspects arrested in the November 10 Delhi blast, faces scrutiny for alleged money laundering and terror financing. Its founder, Jawad Siddiqui, is currently in Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody.

Madani asserted that narratives portraying Muslims as “helpless” were incorrect, citing international examples such as Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York mayor and Sadiq Khan’s tenure as London mayor.

He alleged that the government “wants the ground to slip from under their feet.”

    Opposition leaders back Madani

Congress leader Udit Raj backed Madani’s comments, saying Muslims “are facing discrimination,” though he condemned terrorism “without forgiveness.”

“I agree that if someone has done terrorist activity in Al Falah University, there is no forgiveness. But why target the university? Why bulldoze Muslim homes?” Raj asked, comparing India with the US, which he said grows because of “no discrimination.”

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari demanded that the Prime Minister “hold a press conference and clarify.”

BJP hits back, accuses Madani of ‘duality’

The BJP strongly criticised Madani’s comments.
Party leader Mohsin Raza accused him of “looting Muslims” and playing “blame-game politics.”

“Madani and his family have looted the country’s Muslims and did nothing for their development despite receiving minority grants,” Raza said.

Another BJP leader, Yaser Jilani, called Madani “confused,” arguing India is the safest and most supportive place for Muslims.

“He talks about struggles of Muslims, but cites Zohran Mamdani and Sadiq Khan abroad. Al Falah’s owner faces charges, and Azam Khan has multiple offences. He should not create confusion,” Jilani remarked.

The controversy comes as the Delhi blast investigation expands and national security agencies increase scrutiny of institutions linked to the accused.
