Former Bihar legislator Anant Singh, now contesting as the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] candidate from Mokama, was arrested early Sunday in connection with the murder of Jan Suraaj worker Dular Chand Yadav. The arrest comes just days ahead of the Bihar assembly elections.

Yadav, a gangster-turned-politician and former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) member, was killed on Thursday while campaigning for his nephew, Priyadarshi Piyush, who is contesting on a Jan Suraaj Party ticket led by Prashant Kishor.

According to police, Singh was detained from his Barh residence along with two associates, Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram, both of whom were reportedly present at the scene during the incident.

“Three persons — Anant Singh, Manikant Thakur, and Ranjeet Ram — have been arrested in connection with the murder of Dular Chand Yadav,” said Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma during a late-night press briefing alongside District Magistrate Thyagarajan S M.

The post-mortem report revealed that Yadav died of cardiorespiratory failure caused by injuries to the heart and lungs inflicted by a hard and blunt object. “The findings and initial investigation confirm this is a case of murder,” SSP Sharma added.

Speaking earlier on Thursday, Singh denied any involvement, claiming he was “nowhere near the scene” when the altercation broke out between Yadav and his supporters. He also accused his political rival Suraj Bhan, husband of RJD candidate Veena Devi, of orchestrating the killing to “defame” him.

Anant Singh, a well-known strongman in Bihar politics, had won the Mokama seat in 2020 as an RJD candidate but was disqualified following his conviction under the Arms Act in 2022. His wife, Neelam Devi, subsequently won the by-election on the same seat.

Following the murder, the Election Commission ordered the transfer of Patna SP (Rural) Vikram Sihag and suspended several officials, including Abhishek Singh, SDPO Barh-2, citing lapses in supervision. Disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against three local officers.

Bihar goes to polls in two phases on November 6 and 11, with results scheduled to be announced on November 14.
