OpenAI CEO calls India fastest-growing market for Codex at AI Impact Summit
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision on artificial intelligence, calling his approach to democratising AI “outstanding” after a meeting in New Delhi.
Altman, who is in India for the India AI Impact Summit 2026, said he was impressed by the country’s rapid AI adoption and builder ecosystem.
“I love the Prime Minister’s vision. His enthusiasm for what this can be, the need to democratise this technology — which is very near to our hearts — and his focus on ensuring that everyone benefits while mitigating risks was outstanding,” Altman said.
India fastest-growing market for Codex
In a post on X, Altman revealed that India is now OpenAI’s fastest-growing market for Codex, recording a fourfold increase in weekly users over the past two weeks.
“This is already our second-largest market, and it’s growing incredibly fast. There’s something very special happening here,” he said.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the summit being hosted at Bharat Mandapam, which has drawn policymakers, industry leaders, academics and civil society representatives from over 110 countries.
AI Summit’s global participation
The India AI Impact Summit 2026 — the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South — is structured around three foundational pillars: People, Planet and Progress. The event has seen participation from around 30 international organisations and nearly 20 heads of state or government-level representatives.
In a symbolic moment, PM Modi joined global technology leaders for a “family photo” at the venue. The gathering included Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet; Dario Amodei of Anthropic; and Cristiano Amon of Qualcomm.
PM Modi also held separate discussions with Amon at Hyderabad House.
Altman earlier addressed students at IIT Delhi and highlighted the growing energy around AI innovation in India.
