The decision was taken after a fresh assessment of their security perception
The Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government has reduced the security cover of several prominent opposition leaders in the state including MP Sanjay Raut, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik and Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat among others. It means these leaders would not have permanent police security outside their houses or escort.
The decision was taken after a fresh assessment of their security perception, officials said.
As per sources, the security cover for Shiv Sena-UBT President Uddhav Thackeray, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and his family including his daughter and Baramati Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule remains as it is, while Uddhav Thackeray’s personal assistant Milind Narvekar’s security cover was upgraded to the Y category. The security cover of NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad has been maintained.
According to sources, the security cover of leaders of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a coalition of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, NCP, Congress, has been downgraded. Those include Chhagan Bhujbal, Jayant Patil, Nitin Raut, Nana Patole, Vijay Wadettiwar, Varun Sardesai, Dhananjay Munde, Bhaskar Jadhav, and others.
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Ajit Pawar (NCP) and fellow NCP leader Dilip Walse- Patil, who was home minister in the previous MVA government, too have been given ‘Y-plus-escort‘ cover. Congress leaders Ashok Chavan and Prithviraj Chavan, both former chief ministers, have been provided ‘Y category’ security.
