Tributes pour in as Malayalam great Sreenivasan breathed his last

Malayalam moviedom’s numero uno Sreenivasan breathed his last on Saturday at a private hospital in Tripunithura. Sreenivasan, 69, was ailing for some time. Winner of five Kerala state film awards, Srini’s movies retain their freshness decades after they were released, a rare feat in the movie world.

Patyam-born Sreenivasan has been staying at Udayamperur near Ernakulam for the last decade, and his public appearances were limited to a few due to health issues. Sreenivasan leaves behind his wife and two sons, both of them actors and movie makers.

Sreenivasan learnt the nuances of movie-making from the Film Institute at Adyar and made it to the top league through sheer hard work and dedication. The 1991 blockbuster Sandesham is considered an eternal classic. Srini used his pen and camera to highlight the discrepancies in politics and alerted the viewers about the social evils prevailing in society.

Though he had no glamour like Mammootty and Mohanlal, Srini made it up through his acting, writing, and the movies he made. His collaboration with Sathyan Anthikadu saw the production of 15 Malayalam movies, all bearing the signature of the duo who saw and conquered the viewers through simplicity and dignity.

Sreenivasan, though a supporter of the Left-wing ideology, never hesitated to highlight the errors committed by the Communist parties in the state. Some of the characters he portrayed had a distinct resemblance to CPI(M) ideologues like EMS Namboodirippadu, EK Nayanar, and even Pinarayi Vijayan. But the cadres and leaders maintained silence over the issues and stayed away from any kind of discussions about such movies.

The Malayalam movie industry is mourning the loss of a multi-faceted personality who inspired and entertained hundreds of budding filmmakers and artists. Srini leaves behind his wife, Vimala, a homemaker, and two sons, Vinit and Dhyan, both film makers of repute.

Sreenivasan’s demise has shocked ace movie maker Sathyan Anthikkad, long time friend who had worked with him in 15 movies, all hits.
