An Indian Army Captain Karamjit Singh Bakshi, who attained martyrdom in the IED blast in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu division along with Naik Mukesh Singh Manhas on Tuesday, was gradually climbing the ladder of success by adding badges to his chest.

According to official sources, in July-October 2024 Captain Karamjit Singh had undergone the Battalion Support Weapon (BSW) course where he was trained to fire the Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) at Army War College, Mhow.

During the course, Captain Karamjit Singh Bakshi showed exemplary courage as he went on to hit armored vehicles and tanks from a range to earn the badge.

The Battalion Support Weapon (BSW) Course is undertaken by the officers and several other non-commissioned officers where they are equipped to handle the basic infantry weapons that increase the firepower of infantry units. Young and brave Army officers are shortlisted from various infantry units to undergo the training program. The objective is to provide an immediate tactical response to the needs of the unit’s commanding officer.

According to coursemates Captain Karamjit Singh is remembered as a brave officer who never shied away from leading from the front and remained in the thick of things.

On Tuesday Captain Karamjit Singh was leading his team during fence patrol in the Akhnoor sector at the time of the suspected IED blast in which he received fatal injuries. He hailed from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand and was scheduled to tie the knot in the first week of April 2025.

Captain Bakshi visited his hometown in the last week of January to supervise the renovation work ahead of his marriage ceremony. He resumed his duty in the first week of February 2025.

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi also paid homage to the martyred soldiers in the line of duty.

In a post on X ADGPI said, Army Chief salutes the supreme sacrifice of #Bravehearts Captain Karamjit Singh Bakshi and Naik Mukesh who laid down their lives in the line of duty in #Akhnoor, J&K.

Naik Mukesh Singh Manhas from Samba was also dreaming of a happy married life ahead but his life was also cut short by the IED explosion shattering dreams of his family to see him in a wedding dress.

Son of a retired police personnel, Naik Mukesh Singh had earned the distinction of serving in the world’s highest battlefield Siachen.

Mukhtiyar Singh, a former sarpanch of the village said that the whole village is in grief after the tragic death of Mukesh, who served in the Army for 11 years while his brother is also in the army.“We salute his martyrdom as he laid his life in the line of duty,” the former sarpanch said. Another neighbor said, Mukesh visited his home a few days ago and brought tiles, furniture, and other materials for the decoration of his house before marriage. “But this incident turned everything upside down,” he said.
