50 senior doctors resign from RG Kar Medical College amid protests
In a significant development, 50 senior doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata submitted their resignations on Tuesday in solidarity with their junior colleagues protesting against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the hospital premises in August.
The senior doctors’ decision to resign en masse came shortly after the Kolkata Police denied permission for a planned mega rally, which was set to include representatives from both the medical fraternity and health-worker associations. The rally was scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. on the same day to demand justice for the victim.
This mass resignation has created a crisis for the hospital administration and the state health department, as the absence of these senior doctors threatens to disrupt medical services just ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja festivities, which start on Thursday.
On Monday, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant appealed to seven junior doctors who were on a hunger strike at Esplanade to end their fast and return to their duties. However, the senior doctors’ collective resignation appears to have intensified the agitation rather than defusing it, raising concerns about the state government’s handling of the situation.
Political analysts suggest that the swift action by the senior doctors underscores the gravity of the issue and may inspire similar actions from senior medical staff at other state-run institutions, potentially escalating tensions for the government.
Since Saturday evening, junior doctors at RG Kar have initiated a unique form of protest. Some have begun a hunger strike, while others have returned to their medical duties after initially ceasing work. The protest began with six junior doctors—three female and three male—who were later joined by a seventh colleague on Sunday evening.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the state government will respond to the growing unrest within the medical community.

What happened to the sue-moto cognizance and appointments of senior Doctors for safety with two more hearings ? If the courts are not in position to resolve the issue why get into to it ? The unwarranted observations, comments and getting into issues which cannot be resolved damages the credibility and erodes the public faith in the system, which people look at and accept for ultimate solution. If the system does not understand this fact and restrain itself, it will be to the detriment of itself.
